Lexan Margard Vs Peeraguard Exterior Clear

by stuart.

lexan-margard-sheet

Lexan Margard is a coated polycarbonate sheet and one of the most popular protective glazing solutions in the world. The Lexan® Margard® MR5E sheet has a high impact strength, graffiti resistance and a good all weather performance.

It has near identical properties to the Peeraguard Exterior Clear coating that Peerless apply to a range of plastic substrates, and when applied to polycarbonate gives the same strengths, benefits and uses as Lexan Margard. Peeraguard Exterior Coating is designed to give optimum protection against weathering, performance losses and yellowing caused by harsh environmental conditions as well as having excellent anti-graffiti properties.

Due to the make up of the Margard coating, it is only suitable for flat applications and the sheets can not be cold formed or altered in any way, this is the major downside to Lexan Margard Sheet and it really does limit the uses and industry in which it can be used.

As Peeraguard can be coated as an aftermarket product, Peeraguard Exterior Clear can be applied to a range of pre-existing moulds and forms giving it a major benefits over standard Lexan Margard sheets. Offering good optical clarity with no ‘rippling’ or flow lines, and a constant coating thickness from edge to edge with a pencil hardness of 6H, Peeraguard Clear is fast becoming one of the most popular hardened and protective coatings in the world.

September 2005

Following on from previous successful partnerships, Peerless Plastics and Coatings are again working with BSKYB and their Sky+ brand to decorate a limited number of exclusively designed Sky+ boxes.

Following the success of the 2004 Sky+ Designer Collection, five of the worlds most desirable and sought after designers have joined forces to present the 2005 range – eight exclusive boxes which are on sale at John Lewis for £99.

UK Designer Wayne Hemingway has designed four boxes celebrating the top scoring Premiership clubs of all time – Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea. The remaining four boxes see the creative talents of accessories designer, Lulu Guinness; luxury wallpaper designer, Cole & Son; fabric and wallpaper specialists, Osborne & Little; and wallpaper and paint experts, Farrow & Ball; come together in an eclectic range that fuses technology and design in spectacular fashion.

Peerless was chosen to decorate the boxes because of the complex process involved. The company is one of only a few using the latest in digital technology to print onto 3D objects in a process called Water Transfer Printing, where a water-soluble PVA film is used on the waters surface to transfer ink to the product.

The Sky+ boxes were painted with a specific base colour, a printed film was then applied to the boxes using the Aquadec water transfer system. Finally a satin top coat lacquer was applied to give a hard wearing, durable finish.

James Grint, MD Peerless, “We are very pleased to have been contracted to deliver the limited edition Sky+ Designer range. It is the first time we have combined two technologies on one product and we are very satisfied with the results. Grey boxes are all around us in the home, in business and in other places. The process we use can transform the dullest of objects and it is ideal for matching to furniture and fittings in the home. Plus, the ability to cope with individual items means everyone can enjoy a designer moment.”

Protective Visors

Protective Visors – February 2008

February 2008

Peerless have been chosen to coat safety polycarbonate visors for protection against harmful chemicals. Health and Safety plays a big part in all manor of business today so when Peerless were approached to apply a chemical resistant coating on the front of polycarbonate visors they were only to happy to come up with the solution.

Using one of our most popular plastic coatings, Peeraguard Clear, we found the ideal solution to the determination problem. It features excellent chemical resistance properties, as well as being abrasion resistant and featuring a anti-graffiti coat.

As you can see in the picture below the original visor grade polycarbonate could not withstand the aggressive properties of the chemical Acetone and soon became un-useable and dangerous. Visor grade polycarbonate in its uncoated form is easily susceptible to damage, but with the Peeraguard Clear hard coating applied it becomes much more durable with enhanced longevity.

Peeraguard is characterised by extremely good physical, optical and chemical properties. It is a U.V cured; high gloss no distortion coating with a surface hardness of 6H.

Peeraguard Clear can also protect and enhance acrylics, PET, PETg and many other plastic substrates. Peeraguard is a versatile coating which can be tailor-made to your specific requirements, including anti-glare and anti-reflective surface finishes.

Privacy Bus Shelters

January 2009

Bus Stops have moved on from the simple post from many years ago, most are now fully digital, enclosed and weather proof. Still one problem has remained, especially in residential areas, where privacy is an issue.

Peerless were approached by an engineering company to custom build a new breed of bus shelter. The brief was to find a solution to make sure people using the shelters were safe and visible to drivers, but the privacy of nearby residents also needed to be protected.

Traditional metal Cladding could be used, but not only is it unsightly but it also causes visibility problems and security risks to the occupants of the shelters. The solution was to coat the usual clear plastic in Peeraguard Exterior Frost. As well as the frost effect, the exterior coating is abrasion and chemical resistant which protects the base material, in this case clear Polycarbonate, from harsh exterior conditions, UV from sunlight and vandalism. The coating will also assist the easy removal of graffiti substances.

This programme is now being rolled out in other locations around the UK.

Martian Museum of Terrestrial Art Spring 2008

Spring 2008

Peerless were approached by one of London’s top architects in preparation for the Martian Museum of Terrestrial Art at the Barbican Art Gallery. The brief from the curators of the Barbican was to help design the space around the exhibit. Part of this would be the signs and signage.

For a more abstract feel, it was decided that signs should be finished in a matt finish for effect and not to detract from the wording and motherboard interpretation. Peerless applied Peeraguard 10 to seventeen bright green acrylic introductory panels and 4 black acrylic art category signs. As well as having the desired matt effect, the Peeraguard plastic coating also had the added advantage of abrasion and chemical resistant properties.

The exhibition was a huge hit, with the Telegraph calling it ‘One of the year’s zaniest shows’

Longchamp Store, New York

Longchamp Store - May 2007 3

May 2007

A rundown building in New York has been converted into a contemporary flagship store for handbag retailer Longchamp. The retail space is situated above street level so designers were asked to find a way to draw people up into the store from the main sidewalk.

Heatherwick studios of London and Atmosphere Design Group of New York took over two years to design the one off staircase which utilises natural light which shines down through the building, and onto this impressive staircase which took nearly six months to build.

Peerless coated the uniquely formed panels that make up the balustrade in Peeraguard Clear on both sides. This coating made the Polyester PETG Sheets both chemical and abrasion resistant, which is still going strong some 5 years later after hundreds of thousands of feet have scaled (and descended) down this magnificent piece.

“This job was a real challenge to coat” said Dr Sean Farnan, Operations Manager “Every panel was a different size and in 3-Dimensions which meant a different set-up each time, but as you can see the results were well worth the effort”

The retail store is now acknowledged as a work of art and the interior is made of an impressive 55 tonnes of steel and 4 tonnes of Peerless Peeraguard coated Polyester PETG Sheets.

Fracino Cybercino - Summer 2008 1

Summer 2008

Peerless Coatings have teamed up with UK renowned cappuccino and espresso machine manufacturer Fracino. Their new industrial coffee maker, the Cybercino has a retro-style appearance and is a fully-automated machine which works at exceptionally fast speeds with the ease and efficiency of innovative bean-to-cup technology.

Peerless were approached to apply the black “Corian” speckled effect, to a high volume of metal bases and fascias. This was an exciting new project for Peerless and with the skill of their coating staff and research and development team it was a new finish to add to their ever increasing portfolio. The speckled decorative finish is a two coat process using paint splatter and a lower percentage lacquer to give a slightly matted effect at the fraction of the cost of real material.
